Goatsuckers Galore

Where: Pine Barrens Commission Office, County Road 31, West Hampton (map)

Description": Join Four Harbors Audubon Society as we venture to the Long Island Dwarf Pine Plains on an extraordinary Strawberry Full Moon night, which coincidently coincides with a Supermoon, when the Moon is at one of its closest points to Earth. We will listen for two of the Island's native "goatsuckers" - Chuck-will's-widow and Whip-poor-will, as they call at night during the breeding season. The walk will provide an overview of this fascinating group of birds and you'll learn how they got their goatsucker name! Before dark, we'll look for nesting birds such as Prairie Warbler, Eastern Towhee, and Vesper Sparrow, that inhabit the Dwarf Pine Plains. With some luck, we might see a buck moth, striped skunk, or grey fox.

Meet at the Pine Barrens Commission office on the east side of County Route 31 in Westhampton, just south of the Exit 63 interchange with Sunrise Highway. Bring a flashlight and comfortable shoes as we'll be walking approximately two miles. Wear tick-repellent clothing.

Leader: John Turner. Please R.S.V.P. by emailing fourharborsheron@gmail.com or call John Turner at 516-695-1490.
