Description:
FOUR HARBORS AUTUMN LECTURE (Zoom Webinar)
Tuning In To Nocturnal Bird Migration
Presented by William R. Evans
Tuesday, October 27, 2020, 7:30 p.m.
While we sleep during the spring and fall migration periods, large waves of migrating birds clandestinely pass overhead. For more than 30 years Bill Evans has been studying the vocalizations birds give during these nocturnal flights. Bill will share his insights into this cryptic night flight calling phenomenon, play examples of the calls, and present results from regional acoustic monitoring stations.
Bill Evans is director of Old Bird Inc., a NY-based nonprofit focused on nocturnal bird migration research and education. He co-authored the online resource“Flight Calls of Migratory Birds” with Michael O’Brien http://oldbird.org/pubs.htm. Bill’s expertise on nocturnal bird migration led him to active efforts to mitigate avian fatalities at communications towers and wind turbines. His current research is directed toward understanding the impacts of artificial light on night-migrating birds and their concentration dynamics along shorelines and through montane terrain. Bill’s re-search has been covered by PBS, BBC,NPR and in Science, The New YorkTimes and other science-news periodicals. He lives with his wife and two children in the glaciated Allegheny Plateau ecozone south of Ithaca, NY.
